Allah Almighty said:
"And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims."
In this noble verse, Allah declares that He has revealed this Great Book to His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ as an explanation for all matters. Allah also says: {We have not neglected anything in the Book}. There is no doubt that the Qur'an contains clarification for all things.
Additionally, the entire Sunnah is encompassed within a single verse of the Qur'an: {And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it}.
He replied: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Allah said: {And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it}.
And Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us from 'Abdul Malik ibn Umair, from Rib'i ibn Hiraash, from Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yamaan, that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Follow the two who come after me: Abu Bakr and Umar.'
Sufyan also narrated to us from Mis'ar ibn Kidaam, from Qais ibn Muslim, from Taariq ibn Shihaab, that Umar ibn Al-Khattaab commanded the killing of a hornet by a person in Ihram.
Our scholars said: "This is an answer of utmost excellence. It represents a fatwa permitting the killing of a wasp during the state of ihram, and it clarifies that this ruling is based on following the precedent set by Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). It also highlights that the Prophet ﷺ commanded us to follow him, and that Allah, Exalted and Glorified, has ordered us to accept what the Prophet ﷺ conveys. Thus, the permissibility of killing it (hornet) is derived from both the Qur'an and the Sunnah."
This amazing narration from Imaam Ash-Shaafi’i, may Allah have mercy on him, highlights the comprehensive guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah in addressing all aspects of life. It emphasizes the great principle that the Qur'an provides clarification for everything and that the Sunnah serves as an essential complement to understanding and implementing the Qur'an in the manner prescribed.
It also highlights the sound understanding of Imaam Ash-Shaafi’i in identifying the authentic sources of the Religion and his thorough methodology in approaching and studying the texts.
It further illustrates the importance of deriving rulings from the Qur'aan, the Sunnah, and the practices of the Pious Predecessors, emphasizing their interconnectedness as the Foundation of the Religion in Islamic Creed, Jurisprudence, and daily life.
